Solaris is a cross-platform operating system that is known for its scalability, performance and security.
VirtualBox is a powerful virtualization software that runs in x86 platform. It allows various operating systems to be installed in a single pc. And Solaris is one operating system that can be installed in VirtualBox.
Please see How to Install Solaris in VirtualBox – Part 2
Before actual installation, a virtual disk image must be created to host the operating system as follows:
Run VirtualBox
From Windows Start Menu, run VirtualBox. The “Create New Virtual Machine” dialog appears. Its wizard that guides the user on creating the virtual disk image, or the virtual machine.
VM Name
The next dialog box asks for the name of the virtual machine and the type of operating system to be installed. I used “solaris” and “solaris” correspondingly.
Memory
Select the base memory to be used by the virtual machine. System recommends 512MB.
Hard Disk
Create Virtual Hard disk. System recommends at least 16,384MB of available disk space.
Storage Type
Select the type of hard disk storage types. Two choices are given, dynamic and fixed-size storage. The former uses minimum disk space required by the installation and grows as disk space is required but limited to the size allocated to it. Whereas the latter, consumes the allocated disk space.
Location/Size
In previous step, where storage type is chosen, dynamic storage does not consume the size indicated here, it only grows until the size is reached. Whereas fixed-size type consumes the disk size allocated here.
Specify the location where the virtual disk image will be stored and the hard disk space to be allocated for the installation.
Summary
The summary of parameters of the new virtual disk image will be displayed. click “Finish”
Finish
The virtual disk image is created !!!
